Orphan Egg Box
The California Academy of Sciences
This small box contains eggs collected by amateurs and scientists who did not see a bird at the nesting site, so the eggs cannot be catalogued and stored with the eggs of their (suspected) species. Eggs are rarely collected now, and in many countries the private collection and trading of eggs, nests, feathers, and live birds is a violation of laws designed to protect endangered species.
The nests were photographed in four science collections: The California Academy of Sciences, The Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology, The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, the Cornell Museum of Vertebrates, and the American Museum of Natural History.
Subject Details:
Eggs from a variety of species of birds.
