Hive Lamp by J McDonald
Contemporary
United States
The animated form of Hive Lamp balances precariously on a steel prop. Reminiscent of a root or a nest but with a scale and presence of that competes with the human, the handmade paper skin is sliced in six places, it’s extremities amputed. We are left to imagine it’s reach when whole, how perhaps it will wor once extended to finger the corners of the room, of the world. Through its cuts it bleeds light, it’s interior glowing softly through soft pink glass. It is not the only thing that was once whole, capable of balancing proudly and independently without a human to prop it up; but as we cut things down we simultaneously prop them up, working feverishly to counter our own destructive force.
