Belgian School, possibly associated with the CoBrA movement
circa 1950s–1960s
Monumental work on paper depicting a solitary seated figure rendered through forceful black contours and broad, earthy washes. The dramatically enlarged head, compressed body, and deliberately unruly draftsmanship give the composition a raw psychological intensity.
The work bears a strong affinity with CoBrA, the experimental postwar movement founded in 1948 by artists and poets connected to Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. Rejecting academic convention, CoBrA artists embraced spontaneity, expressive gesture, distorted figuration, and imagery inspired by children’s drawings, folk traditions, and the unconscious. Although the collective formally disbanded in 1951, its influence remained particularly strong within Belgian and Northern European art.
